· The Covid pandemic proved to be a difficult chapter for most of the world. However, several employees groups are sounding the alarm that after two years of this global crisis situation they foresee a protentional system collapse. Supply chain employees including those working in air cargo, maritime and road transportation helped to pen an open letter to the United Nations General Assembly to warn of a “global transport system collapse” and requested changes be made to avoid the potential crisis.
· The changes asked for by these groups included restoring the freedom of movement to transport workers, as well as being prioritized for vaccines by the World Health Organization. They have also requested Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and better overall treatment. This open letter was signed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), The International Transport Workers Federations (ITF) and the International Road Transport Union (IRU). In total these groups represent approximately 65 million transport workers.
· The letter also advised “All transport sectors are also seeing a shortage of workers and expect more to leave as a result of the poor treatment millions have faced during the pandemic, putting the supply chain under greater threat”. It is unclear how these key members of the supply chain work force concerns will be addressed however it is certain this letter helped to bring their concerns to the forefront.
