Extended Strike at British Columbia Expected

· The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) provided notice and started a planned strike in British Columbia ports over the weekend. Both Prince Ruppert and Vancouver ports are affected in this strike, and it seems highly unlikely there will be a quick resolution over the stalled contact negotiations.

· The items still in contention are how positions for heavy duty maintenance will be filled. As well as the reach of the union to expand to other types of maintenance jobs at the port facility. At this point both parties seem unwilling to compromise on these issues.

· The impact to shipments is likely to be huge as the strike is expected to be an extended amount of time. Those planning to possibly divert shipments to avoid delays will likely find little relief as other unions in the US have expressed their support for the strike and have further stated they will not unload diverted cargo in an act of solidary.
