· Congestion has been an ongoing battle seen all over the United Sates (US) import market especially since the beginning of the pandemic. Due to increased supply chain pressure felt throughout the US, volume has been racing in at record levels and adding to port and rail congestion. Ahead of the holiday weekend several key locations are advising that bottlenecks are creating a major slow down.
· The BNSF rail in Dallas has alerted due to a lack of chassis containers are being forced into stacks to be pulled out a later time. The BNSF announcement also includes a specification because the Alliance spill over yard setup does not allow for cherry picking preventing cargo from moving on private chassis. It is worth noting in this location the rail competitor Union Pacific (UP) is also not able to allow for cherry picking of containers. The BNSF team has confirmed storage will not be charged for containers located in these stacks however the UP does have the policy to charge daily storage.
· The US west coast is also confirming they are once again facing a bottleneck of cargo as ships are being forced to wait offshore until they can work the vessel. With the holiday weekend it should be expected that most ports and rails are facing up to a couple of weeks of clearing out a backlog of imports.
