· In recent years fraud and theft have been an increasing problem for US shippers, truckers, and brokers across the board. Despite this growing issue there is no agency charged with monitoring freight theft or helping to deter this growing problem. CargoNet, a membership-based service to help prevent and potentially recover stolen freight has identified they saw a sharp increase in reported incidents in 2022. And in the short 5 months of 2023 have already received more incidents reported than last year.
· These cargo thefts are happening in range of ways and although they include the traditionally thought of methods like container break ins, scams including fraudulent pickups that typically work by an illegitimate trucking agency picking up cargo and disappearing with the contents before anyone realizes they are not a real company. There have also been major increases in cases of double brokering, which is when a shipper passes their freight to a broker expecting it to be dispatched to a valid carrier but instead is issued to another broker unknown to the shipper.
· With this increase in larceny and scams it is becoming increasingly important for everyone to be more vigilant in verifying who they are working with and knowing the practices employed to keep cargo safe by all in the supply chain.
